Metis Design Corporation (MDC) is a technical consulting firm that focuses on Structural Health Monitoring, Electro-Mechanical Design and Lean Enterprise Solutions. MDC engineers combine creativity with hands-on design experience and fundamental principles to develop novel solutions for a wide range of real-world challenges. The experience of the MDC staff spans a broad range of disciplines, ranging from air and spacecraft applications to biomedical devices and consumer products.

Structural Health Monitoring - SHM denotes the ability to detect and interpret "changes" in a structure to improve safety at reduced inspection costs. Essentially, non-invasive detection techniques are integrated to monitor the health of a component. MDC has emerged as an SHM industry leader, conducting research in nearly every aspect of this discipline. MDC engineers have achieved significant advancements in the state-of-the-art for SHM architecture, infrastructure, sensors, hardware, packaging, modeling and algorithms, leading to a robust portfolio of patented and patent-pending technologies. SHM investigations at MDC have focused both on the maturation of proven methods for near term deployment as well as pushing the envelope with revolutionary new technologies for future implementation.

Electro-Mechanical Design - This unique service provides clients with optimal designs, comprehensive analyses and testing programs to transition new product concepts through prototype and production. Products are customized to meet customer needs, finding a balance between aesthetics, cost and performance. Each challenge is distilled to fundamentals to optimize form-factor, weight and cost without sacrificing desired functionality. MDC engineers employ their diverse knowledge of sensors, data acquisition, communications, and signal processing to deliver alternatives to "off-the-shelf" limitations. Devices can be ruggedly packaged, and custom codes can be embedded for portable applications. Composite laminates and even nano-engineered materials can be introduced to meet difficult goals.

Lean Enterprise Solutions - In collaboration with the Lean Advancement Initiative (LAI), MDC has developed tools for implementing lean process improvements in challenging environments.  MDC has refined LAI's Lean Enterprise Value Simulation into a powerful modular table-top simulation, which serves as the core for customized active learning experiences, from basic courses to advanced "black-belt" training.  MDC has created several tools for lean engineering, including guides to product development, value stream mapping and organizational transformation. MDC is working with major aerospace companies to design and implement training, team-building, and transformation "kick-start" events.   MDC has also developed advanced architecting methods for conceptual design of complex systems and systems-of-systems.
